The Kosovar Prime Minister said that Russia’s victory in Ukraine would encourage Serbia to renew its expansionist desires.

Albin Kurti, who has led the country since 2021, said in an interview with the Associated Press that the West must remain united behind Ukraine, which has been fighting Russia for more than two years.

The leader argued that if Russia were to triumph, Serbia would feel emboldened and would jeopardize the decades-old peace by trying to annex countries such as Bosnia, Montenegro and North Macedonia.

Relations between Serbia and Kosovo have remained tense for more than a decade despite efforts by the European Union.

“These 25 years, in this century, have been a quarter of a century in which peace, freedom and democracy have reached their highest level in the Balkans,” said Albin Kurti.

“The despotic President Putin would be encouraged to continue his attempts at destabilization, especially if he feels he is succeeding in Ukraine. I really don’t want to believe that he can theoretically win. But the fact that he thinks he can win is already problematic,” he admitted.
