Liam Payne’s ex-girlfriend is paying tribute to the singer and revealing a message she received from him weeks before his death.

Danielle Peazer, a dancer who dated Payne from 2010 to 2013, remembered the late One Direction star Sunday on Instagram after he died in Argentina on Wednesday due to a fall from a hotel balcony. He was 31.

Peazer said that while her relationship with Payne ended more than a decade ago, “that seemed to be just the start of our story,” and “deep down we always knew we’d have some sort of connection forever, no matter where our individual lives took us.”

She went on to share that she received a message from Payne “a couple of weeks ago” where he expressed his “happiness for the love I found with” her partner Sonny Jay and daughter Mia. This is “something I’ll cherish forever,” Peazer said.

Peazer also wrote that although she was “aware” of Payne’s “struggles over the years,” she “hoped and prayed that this day would never come.”

Addressing the singer in the post, she reflected that it took “a little longer for you to figure out the person you wanted to be in order to be your happiest” because “whilst most of us have our teens and twenties to learn about ourselves, you spent those years giving more to the world than you ever needed to.”

“I wish you knew that you were always more than enough for this world without having to search for a role to play just to please others,” she said. Peazer concluded her tribute by writing, “I’m sorry your story didn’t end differently, and I’m sorry you didn’t ever get to share more of your magic with the world. Rest easy my friend.”

Payne had previously spoken about his struggles with addiction. Police in Argentina said they were called to the singer’s hotel regarding an “aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol.”

Numerous tributes to Payne have been shared by his loved ones in the days since his death, including from his former One Direction bandmates. Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson said in a joint statement that they are “completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing.”

Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy also said on her Instagram story Friday that she has “been at a complete loss.”

“Nothing about the past few days have felt real,” Cassidy wrote. “I ask and pray that you’ll give me the grace and space to navigate this in private.”
