There has been bad blood between Monterrey and Inter Miami in recent times. The Mexican side’s head coach Fernando Ortiz began by saying Miami enjoyed favourable refereeing, and his assistant, Nico Sanchez, later apologised for branding Messi a “possessed dwarf”. There were clashes between players in the tunnel after the first leg – that led to Miami being issued with a fine – and that animosity has seemingly spilled out to the fans, too.
Monterrey will face Colombus Crew in the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-finals later this month, whereas Messi’s Miami are next in action away to Sporting Kansas City on in the MLS.
