Sporting manager Ruben Amorim has reportedly reached a verbal agreement in principle with Liverpool.
According to Sky Germany, the 39-year-old is believed to have engaged in discussions regarding a three-year contract to potentially succeed Jurgen Klopp.
Sources close to Liverpool have refuted these claims, labeling them as “wholly inaccurate.”
They emphasized that the club is conducting a comprehensive assessment of various candidates and has not designated a preferred choice.
Amorimwas also reportedly under consideration for the managerial position at Bayern Munich before Thomas Tuchel’s departure.
The Portuguese gaffer possesses an exit clause in his contract with Sporting, potentially facilitating a move this summer.
Earlier this year, Klopp announced his decision to step down from his position after nearly nine successful years at Anfield.
During his tenure, Klopp has led Liverpool to victory in several prestigious competitions, including the Champions League, Club World Cup, Premier League, Super Cup, FA Cup, and two League Cups.
Despite his impending departure, Klopp still has the opportunity to further enhance his remarkable trophy cabinet.
Liverpool currently sits second in the Premier League standings on goal difference, with seven games remaining in the season. Additionally, they are set to face Atalanta in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Since Klopp’s announcement, Liverpool has undergone significant changes in its organizational structure. Former sporting director Michael Edwards has returned to the club as the chief executive of football operations.
Richard Hughes is also set to join from Bournemouth as the new sporting director, and there have been reports linking Pedro Marques from Benfica to a senior backroom role at Anfield.
Xabi Alonso, the esteemed former Liverpool midfielder, was strongly rumored to be Klopp’s potential successor due to his impressive managerial work at Bayer Leverkusen.
However, Alonso recently confirmed his decision to remain with Bayer Leverkusen for the upcoming season, despite being on the verge of leading them to their first Bundesliga title.
With Alonso out of contention, Ruben Amorim has emerged as the leading candidate for the Liverpool managerial role.
Amorim has enjoyed a successful four-year tenure at Sporting, guiding them to their first league title in 19 years during his first full season in charge.
He has also secured two League Cups with Sporting and is on track to claim his second league title this season, with his team currently four points clear of Benfica, with a game in hand.
