Alexander Lukashenko said that Vladimir Putin can’t use nuclear warheads stored in Belarus without his consent.
In an interview with the BBC, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko stated that Vladimir Putin cannot use the nuclear warheads stationed in Belarus without his approval.
Alexander Lukashenko explained that the Russian president must seek his permission if he wishes to use the military arsenal, which has been stored in Belarus for over a year.
“Putin will never use the weapons stationed in Belarus without the Belarusian president’s consent,” he said.
He argued that nuclear weapons should only be used if the country is under invasion.
“I’m completely ready, otherwise why have these weapons? But only if the boot of one [foreign] soldier steps into Belarus. We have no plans to attack anyone,” he added.
A long-time ally of Moscow, Lukashenko has consistently refused to send Belarusian troops to fight in Ukraine, despite repeated requests from the Russian president.
Additionally, the Belarusian leader warned that if North Korean troops were indeed present on the Ukrainian front, it would mark a serious escalation of tensions.
Lukashenko made these remarks on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.
