A driver killed 35 people and injured 43 others in a car crash in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on Monday night , local police said Tuesday.
The first reports of the incident came out on Monday, but police then said there were only injuries and videos of the incident have since disappeared from social media.
On Tuesday, the security body admitted that “a serious and aggressive attack took place at the Zhuhai Sports Centre”, where a major aviation fair is being held these days.
“A suspect drove his car into people who were exercising, resulting in 35 dead and 43 injured,” local police said.
The 62-year-old driver, surnamed Fan, “hurled a small SUV through the gate and forced his way into the city’s sports centre, ramming into people exercising on the internal streets” of the facility, he said.
Assailant arrested
Police found Fan in his car cutting himself with a knife. “They immediately arrested him and sent him to a hospital for treatment,” the police said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called for “every effort” to be made to heal the injured and “punish the perpetrator according to law,” the official Xinhua news agency reported.
The city of Zhuhai, located near the autonomous regions of Macau and Hong Kong, is currently hosting the country’s largest civil and military aerospace fair.
