Matthijs de Ligt clashed with Brentford forward Kevin Schade early into the game which left him with a deep, bleeding wound on his head and was forced off the pitch to receive treatment. While the United medical staff tried to stop his bleeding on the sideline and the team was reduced to 10 men, Ethan Pinnock netted the opening goal for the Bees to break the deadlock.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The coaching staff were understandably frustrated with the referee’s decision to allow the game to go on despite the hosts being a man down. The Mirror now reports that Red Devils first-team coach Fletcher was seen arguing with the officials aggressively as they headed into the tunnel at half-time.

The report also adds that the FA could punish Fletcher if referee Samuel Barrott included the incident in his report. Right after the goal, manager Erik ten Hag and his assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy were also seen approaching the fourth official in anger to protest the decision.
