- Van Basten slams Ugarte for ‘walking around’
- Calls out ‘crazy’ Ten Hag spending
- Questions Man Utd’s squad quality
United’s woes under Erik ten Hag have continued this season as the Red Devils have had one of their worst starts in Premier League history. United currently sit 13th in the league standings, having won just twice in their opening six games despite going guns blazing in the summer transfer window and signing five new players, including former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Ugarte for a whopping fee of £51 million ($60m). Van Basten has slammed the Uruguayan for “walking around” the field during Tottenham’s 3-0 win at Old Trafford while claiming that the Red Devils have “no top players”.
Speaking to Ziggo Sport, Van Basten said: “I saw a new player, Ugarte, or something like that.
“Fifty million euros! Then I think: how can he walk around like that? It’s crazy how much money he [Ten Hag] spent on players who aren’t good.”
Van Basten also questioned United’s overall squad quality, adding: “Just no top players. [Marcus] Rashford? He doesn’t hit a pepper nut anymore. [Bruno] Fernandes is a good player, [Andre] Onana is a decent keeper. For the rest, there are no guys about whom you can say: they are strong players.
“Casemiro? He’s passé. Name any name. That right-winger, [Alejandro] Garnacho, is a decent player. But not a key player. There are no players others can cling to.”
The Red Devils are now set to take on Porto in the Europa League at Estadio do Dragao on Thursday, October 3 and Ugarte is likely to start the game yet again.
