In an unprecedented national radio and television broadcast , the Attorney General of the Public Ministry, Johel Zelaya, together with Luis Javier Santos , head of the Specialized Fiscal Unit Against Corruption Networks (Uferco), presented a series of documents that, according to them, constitute key evidence in the corruption cases attributed to the former mayor of the Central District , Nasry Asfura Zablah.

Former mayor of the  Central District  and presidential candidate,  Nasry Asfura , appeared this Monday at a hearing to  declare the accused, where the judge ordered alternative measures .

Supported accusation

During the national radio and television broadcast , officials from the Public Ministry assured that the accusation against Asfura is supported by solid evidence that demonstrates the alleged commission of various crimes during his administration in the Mayor’s Office of the Central District.

Zelaya said that high-impact public-private corruption has robbed the country of its present and future, plunging Honduras into a cycle of poverty, insecurity and despair.

He also stressed that drug trafficking and organised crime, along with crimes against humanity, have crossed borders, leaving a trail of pain and death.

“The suffering we feel as a nation has those responsible: criminals who have woven networks of corruption and criminality, who have no color, race, flag or political party; they only seek to enrich themselves at the expense of the Honduran people,” Zelaya said. He also reiterated his commitment to put an end to impunity and assured that justice will reach those who participated in embezzlement and looting of public funds.

MACCIH cases are being taken up again

Zelaya also said he had taken up the cases left by the Mission to Support the Fight against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (MACCIH) and that the Public Prosecutor’s Office would continue to advance the investigations initiated in 2019 against Asfura.

Evidence

Among the evidence presented were financial documents, testimonies and expert analysis indicating that municipal funds were diverted to personal accounts and used for Asfura’s political campaign.

The prosecutor detailed that, between 2017 and 2018, Asfura and other municipal officials issued payment letters to the bank requesting the issuance of 32 checks in the name of Asfura and other involved parties.

Misappropriation of funds

The funds, intended for municipal administration, were diverted and deposited into personal accounts, including Asfura’s own account, Santos emphasized.

To justify the use of these resources, the accused allegedly presented false documents that did not match the forensic analysis carried out.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office said it had sufficient evidence to support the accusations and that all procedures were carried out in accordance with due process.

Finally, Zelaya emphasized that the Public Ministry will act firmly and in accordance with the current legal framework, demanding justice for those who have participated in networks of corruption, drug trafficking and looting of public funds, regardless of their power or influence.
