NATO troops would already be deployed in Ukraine if Russia did not have a nuclear arsenal, according to the chairman of the alliance’s military committee.
Speaking at a defense summit in Prague on Sunday, Admiral Rob Bauer stated that NATO forces would have already pushed back Russian troops if Vladimir Putin weren’t constantly invoking the threat of nuclear weapons.
“I am absolutely sure if the Russians did not have nuclear weapons, we would have been in Ukraine, kicking them out,” he explained.
Currently, Russia holds the largest nuclear arsenal in the world, ahead of the United States, with the two countries together possessing about 90% of the world’s nuclear warheads. Some of Russia’s nuclear warheads are stored in Belarus.
Among NATO members, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France have nuclear capabilities.
The military alliance does not plan to deploy troops directly in Ukraine to avoid escalating tensions further.
