Israel Ramírez Íñiguez , recently appointed mayor of Apulco, Zacatecas, Mexico , sparked controversy after images of him surfaced on social media, in which he posed armed and dressed in tactical gear before taking office.
Ramírez, who assumed office on November 2 after his predecessor, Mauro Yuriel Jáuregui Muñoz , was impeached , is the target of criticism for these publications, in which he is seen wielding long weapons and wearing military-style clothing.
The appointment of Ramírez Íñiguez took place in a closed-door session, without access to the media or official notification to the community, which caused discontent among the residents of Apulco.
The mayor’s office had become vacant after the state Congress stripped Jáuregui Muñoz of his immunity, who is currently a fugitive on charges of attempted murder and alleged ties to the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG).
Although the official deleted his social media accounts, the photos had already been widely disseminated on Facebook, raising concerns about the influence of organized crime in local politics.
What do the authorities say?
State prosecutor Cristian Camacho Osnaya said that after the dismissal of Jáuregui Muñoz , an investigation was initiated against him.
However, when questioned about a possible investigation against the councilor, the prosecutor clarified that so far there is no open investigation at the state level, although he did not rule out that the issue could be dealt with at the federal level.
