A bit ironic… The Taliban, according to the Russian news agency TASS, will now be removed from Russia’s list of terrorist organizations.
Last July, Vladimir Putin called the Taliban “trusted allies.” Indeed, they support the Russian president in his fight against terrorism from the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) active mainly in Pakistan and Afghanistan, reports The Daily Digest. Although Russia has always held Kiev responsible for the deadly attack on Moscow City Hall last March, which left 144 dead, it’s now convinced that ISKP was behind the assault. The group has taken full responsibility for it.
Since August 2021 and the takeover of Kabul (the Afghan capital), Putin has become very close to the Taliban, probably to gain their support in his maneuvers to crush the ISKP. A somewhat “ironic” rapprochement since Russia waged a relentless war against the mujahideen (from which the Taliban originated) from 1979 to 1989 and the country was occupied for 10 years. Namely, the Taliban’s vocation is to destroy the threat that Western culture poses to Islam.
For the moment, the Taliban firmly and officially reject statements concerning the presence of militants on their soil. The Kremlin leader could therefore have difficulty rallying them to his cause.
