The closure of the shelter will affect thousands of immigrants arriving in New York in the coming months. This shelter is the Radall’s Island Humanitarian Emergency Response and Aid Center.
This shelter is characterized by being a complex of giant tents. It is noted that the conditions of the place were not the most favorable for migrants, due to the lack of privacy and basic services.
This center was established in 2023 in New York, United States, to receive immigrants transported by bus to the city from the southern border states.
The shelter has four air-conditioned sleeping tents with beds attached to each other, with a capacity for 2,000 people, and toilets and showers nearby. They are given an identification card and undergo routine tests for Covid-19 and tuberculosis.
The extreme influx of immigrants has led to the opening of 202 emergency centers across the five counties in the past few years. Some were dedicated solely to sheltering families with children.
When will the shelter close?

Why will the migrant shelter close?
The measures to close the shelter have been made public after local authorities assured that they are working on a project to benefit immigrants with long-term housing facilities.
As a result of the closure, New York Mayor Eric Adams has assured that the fields and parks at Randall’s will be restored to people’s enjoyment within a few months. The shelter’s closure is to relieve pressure on municipal services and ensure better treatment for temporary asylum seekers.
