Nigerian Police Rearrest Inmate Who Escaped Borno Prison Amid Flooding

The police said Auwalu, who was serving a jail term for criminal conspiracy and theft, was apprehended on Wednesday after a credible source tipped their operatives about his location.

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of an inmate, Auwalu Aminu, 24, who escaped from the Medium Security Custodian Center in Maiduguri, Borno State.

A statement issued by Nahum Kenneth Daso, the spokesman for the state police command, on Wednesday, said Auwalu fled the prison when Maiduguri was flooded in September 2024.

The police said Auwalu who was serving a jail term for criminal conspiracy and theft was apprehended on Wednesday after a credible source tipped their operatives about his location.

 

The statement reads: “The Borno State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Mohammed Lawal Yusufu, has successfully re-arrested another escaped convict one Auwalu Aminu (aka Auwalu Kirkir), 24 years old.

 

“Auwalu Aminu who was serving a jail term for criminal conspiracy and theft at the Medium Security Custodian Center in Maiduguri. Unfortunately escaped due to the devastating flood incident in September 2024, which collapsed the fence of the facility.

“On October 16, 2024, police surveillance at Bama Area Command/Banki Divisional headquarters received a credible tip-off that Auwalu Kirkir was sighted in Banki town. The police patrol swiftly responded and apprehended the said Awalu Aminu.

 

“The convict has been profiled and will be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action.

 

“The Command remains committed in ensuring safety and urges members of the public to report any suspicious activities or information regarding fugitives to the nearest police station or through the following channels: 0806 807 5581, 0802 347 3293.”

 

SaharaReporters on September 10 broke the news that no fewer than 200 inmates had escaped after a devastating flood pulled down the prison walls in Maiduguri.

The severe flooding, collapsed the walls of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) and allowed 281 inmates to escape, according to NCoS spokesman Umar Abubakar, in a statement issued in Abuja.

Abubakar later said seven of them had been recaptured and returned to the facility.
