North Korea has ratified a landmark defense treaty with Russia, state media reported on Tuesday, a pact that seals deeper security cooperation between the two countries amid Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
The state news agency KCNA said the agreement “was ratified in the form of a decree” signed by North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, on November 11. The announcement comes a day after Moscow said that Russian President, Vladimir Putin, had also signed the mutual defense treaty.
According to Kiev, some 11,000 North Korean troops are already deployed in Russia and have begun fighting Ukrainians on Russian territory in the Kursk region, part of which has been occupied by Ukrainian forces since August.
With the involvement of North Korea, Mark Rutte, NATO’s Secretary General, believes that:
“This dangerous extension of the conflict is leading to an escalation of the war and demonstrates that our security is not regional, but global”.
