Amid deep sadness, family, friends and members of Olimpia gathered on Monday outside a funeral home in La Ceiba to pay tribute to Edward Demetri Gordon , a young player who died in a tragic traffic accident.

The pain of the family and the consternation of those who knew him reflect the great loss that he represents for Honduran football and for those who saw him as an example of humility and dedication.

The first team of Olimpia , led by technical director Pedro Troglio and the coaching staff, traveled from Tegucigalpa after their match with Juticalpa to accompany the family and say goodbye to Gordon, who had achieved his dream of playing in the team’s main squad.

“Demetri was one in a million,” said Elizabeth Burgos, the footballer’s aunt, who was deeply moved when recalling the simplicity and charisma of the 21-year-old.

‘I saw it start from nothing

Among those in attendance, Crisia Murillo, Gordon’s sister, tearfully recounted her brother’s sacrifices and efforts to achieve his goals in football.

“He is my little brother. I saw him start from nothing, take a taxi, a bus, to become the person he is today… no one will fill his void ,” she said.

The words of his teammates also brought comfort to his family, who expressed their solidarity and were affected by the loss of their teammate, recalling his cheerful and respectful character.

Gordon, originally from Santos Guardiola, in the Bay Islands , will be transferred to his birthplace for burial, once his relatives who live abroad arrive in the country.

The final ceremony, which could extend into next weekend, will honor the life and legacy of a young man who, despite his short career, left an indelible mark on his loved ones and the Honduran fans.
