An unexpected accident surprised the inhabitants of Osasco, a municipality near São Paulo, Brazil, when a dirigible balloon hired by the São Paulo football club crashed into several houses, leaving one person injured.
The incident, according to information from Los Andes , occurred prior to the return match of the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores against Botafogo.
According to the international media, the initiative of the São Paulo club sought to promote the important meeting through the use of a hot air balloon that would fly over the city with the message “Let’s go São Paulo . “
However, the dirigible balloon lost stability during the flight and ended up crashing into the tin roofs of some houses in Osasco. The strong impact caused significant damage to the front of the dirigible, leaving it completely deflated and causing chaos in the area.
According to a club spokesperson, “despite the accident, fortunately there were no serious injuries and the club is providing all necessary support to the crew and others involved.”
Street closures and emergency operations
Following the accident, the local police in São Paulo closed the surrounding streets to allow the firefighters and rescue teams to work on the scene.
Local media confirmed the dirigible balloon had the registration number PR-ZAD and belonged to the Brazilian company Airship. The aircraft, 49 metres long and 17 metres high, could reach speeds of up to 85 km/h (53 mph).
The National Civil Aviation Agency ( ANAC ) had previously authorized the testing of the dirigible balloon for night flight over the stadiums of São Paulo.
A precedent for the São Paulo club
According to Los Andes , this was not the first time that São Paulo used a blimp for advertising campaigns. The club had already used this methodology for the 2023 Copa Brasil final , an event in which the team was crowned champion, consolidating the tradition of using the zeppelin as a symbol of triumph.
