Outrage as Grammy plays Fela Kuti’s ‘Water’ while announcing Tyla’s ‘Water’ as winner
At the 66th Grammy Awards, the late Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s song “Water” was played before Tyla, a South African singer, was declared the winner of the inaugural Best African Music Performance category with her song.
The Recording Academy announced on Sunday that Tyla’s song “Water” would win the inaugural Best African Music Performance honour.
Tyla won the category after surpassing tracks by Nigerian artists such as Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’
However, to the surprise of many, following the announcement, Fela’s timeless classic, ‘Water No Get Enemy,’ was played instead of Tyla’s sexually-themed mid-tempo track.
