A group of passengers on an intercity bus heading from Choluteca to Tegucigalpa miraculously managed to save themselves after the unit fell into a ravine at kilometer 52 , near the detour to Reitoca , south of the capital of Honduras.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, left four people injured, including a minor.
The passengers , who experienced moments of great distress, were able to get out of the vehicle thanks to the rapid reaction of the emergency services and other drivers who were passing through the area.
The victims were transported in the back of a patrol car to the village of La Trinidad, in Sabanagrande , where an ambulance was already prepared to receive them.
At the scene, paramedics carried out a transfer of the injured , stabilising them before transferring them to a nearby hospital for appropriate medical care.
Road accidents, second cause of death in Honduras
So far in 2024, Honduras has reported nearly 10,000 traffic accidents , according to data from the National Directorate of Roads and Transportation ( DNVT ).
Although road accidents have decreased compared to previous years, the figures are still alarming and underline the urgent need to improve road safety in the country.
According to official figures, approximately 1,000 deaths have been recorded in road accidents by August 2024 .
