On December 16, 2009, Arturo Beltrán Leyva, a known drug trafficker, died in a confrontation with the Navy in Cuernavaca, Morelos. The Fall of “La Barbie” and her Relationship with “El Barbas”
On August 30, 2010, the government of Felipe Calderón announced the capture of Édgar Valdez Villarreal, known as “La Barbie,” in Toluca, State of Mexico.
During his interrogation, Valdez revealed that Arturo Beltrán Leyva called him the day before his death to request reinforcements in Cuernavaca, where he would face the Navy. Although “La Barbie” suggested that he surrender, Arturo refused and said he preferred to die in combat.
Following his arrest, authorities extradited Valdez to the United States, where he was sentenced to 49 years in prison for drug trafficking and money laundering in 2018.
In 2022, his name disappeared from the records of the Federal Prison Agency, although then-Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard stated that he remained in the custody of US authorities.
