Poland is currently building an “Eastern Shield” along its border with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and with Belarus.
On October 31, Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, declared on his X account (formerly Twitter) that “construction of the Eastern Shield” had begun. The country plans to erect fortifications covering almost 400km. Work is due to be completed by 2028.
Last May, Donald Tusk had already announced his intention to invest 2.35 billion euros in reinforcing security at the Polish border, reports La Dépêche. The aim is not only to improve anti-drone surveillance but also to equip ditches with anti-tank fences, minefields and telecommunications systems.
“Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, Poland’s Minister of Defense, explained: “The aim of the shield is to protect Polish territory, hinder the mobility of the enemy’s troops, while facilitating mobility for our own troops and protecting civilians.” More than two and a half years after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, some former “Eastern Bloc” countries are worried about possible aggression on their territory by Putin’s soldiers.
