According to projections from the tourism sector, around two million people will be travelling around the country during the Morazanic Week break.

On Wednesday, private companies in Honduras joined the official holiday of Morazanic Week , an initiative to promote domestic tourism in the country, which this year coincides with a rainy season that has 11 of the 18 Honduran regions under preventive alert.

For all government employees , the holiday began on Monday and will end on Friday, plus Saturday and Sunday, when there is no work in the public administration.

Some private sector companies have decided to give their employees time off from 12:00 local time (18:00 GMT) on Wednesday.

According to projections by tourism sector authorities, around two million people will be travelling throughout the country during the ‘Semana Morazanica’ holiday, although many Hondurans from areas affected by the rains, such as in the south, east and west, will not travel.

Following the rainy season, a ‘green alert’ (preventive) is in effect in at least 11 of the country’s 18 departments.

What is Morazan Week?

Morazanic Week was instituted during the Administration of Juan Orlando Hernández (2014-2022) and consists of merging three days of official leave registered in October, the 3rd, 12th and 21st, to which two others are added that are deductible, in the case of public employees, from their statutory vacations.

The 12th commemorates the Discovery of America in 1492 and the 21st is Armed Forces Day.

The private sector will resume its activities next Sunday, while the public sector will do so until the 7th.
