Russian MPs on Thursday approved in a first reading a law banning the promotion of a childless lifestyle. In fact, the law was so popular in the Duma that it passed unanimously.
The law is a much-needed step for the Kremlin to deal with the severe demographic consequences of the invasion of Ukraine. Besides, Russia was already struggling with a demographic crisis from the time of the Soviet era. It also wants to defend traditional values in Russia in this way.
The bill will undergo another second and third reading.
