Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that “Russia ignores diplomacy” at a meeting in Rome where he presented his peace plan to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Giorgia Meloni called on Moscow to sit down to negotiate and to be “credible”.
“Russia ignores diplomacy. It is important that everyone cooperates to achieve a just peace,” Zelensky said at a joint news conference with Meloni after a nearly two-hour meeting at the government headquarters.
Mr Zelensky will have an audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican today to explain the Ukrainian “victory plan”, which includes a request for an immediate invitation for Ukraine to join NATO.
He thanked Mr Meloni for “what Italy is doing”, also as rotating president of the G7. And Zelensky concluded: “Defense systems help us save lives.”
