Vladimir Putin has vowed to prevent Ukraine from acquiring nuclear weapons after Volodymyr Zelensky revealed his military was no longer using Soviet arsenals, as kyiv seeks to join NATO.

The Russian leader warned that if Ukraine were to acquire a significant nuclear arsenal, Moscow would respond accordingly. “Russia will not let this happen, no matter what,” he told reporters.

This week, the Ukrainian president unveiled part of his “victory plan” in kyiv, explaining that he wanted Ukraine to quickly join NATO.

Despite the call, NATO has not commented on Zelenskyy’s statements. Its secretary general, Mark Rutte, has said the priority should be to help kyiv recover its occupied territories in order to be in a position to negotiate.

Ukraine also hopes to join the European Union, but Hungary may block its accession because the country’s prime minister, Viktor Orban, has a friendly relationship with Vladimir Putin.
