Russia has reportedly deployed a new, mysterious gas on the battlefield with the intent of quickly incapacitating large numbers of Ukrainian soldiers.
According to Kyiv, the Kremlin is now resorting to a deadly gas, a tactic reminiscent of World War I trench warfare, to suffocate Ukrainian troops.
However, Ukraine has been unable to identify the components of this gas, as admitted by Colonel Artem Vlasiuk, head of radiation, chemical, and biological protection for Ukraine’s support forces.
He told The Kyiv Independent: “Ukraine is currently unable to identify the majority of the gas used on the battlefield, compared to previous months when it could diagnose about half of the chemicals.”
“Of the 323 recorded cases of Russia’s chemical attacks in October, nearly all except 15 incidents were ‘unidentified’,” he added.
This news comes as Russia has regained ground in the Donbas region over the past week.
The Ukrainian commander has called on Western countries to supply his unit with detectors capable of identifying the gas’s chemical components in order to develop efficient countermeasures.
“We can detect tear gas, but if the enemy uses something else more complex, newer, or a mix that is similar in composition but not tear gas, we can’t identify it,” he said to the Ukrainian media.
