A Russian general has been arrested on suspicion of corruption after his former superior disclosed information about him.
The arrest of Major General Alexander Ogloblin, former head of Russia’s military communications department, marks the latest in a series of high-profile detentions among Russian military leadership as Vladimir Putin reportedly seeks to crack down.
The senior officer is currently in pretrial detention for allegedly accepting a bribe of 10 million rubles (approximately 103,000 dollars) from a telecommunications company in exchange for securing a military contract, as reported by Kommersant.
Alexander Ogloblin had previously been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for embezzlement in February 2022, but he was released after testifying against his former superior, Vadim Shamarin, then deputy chief of the Russian General Staff.
According to Kommersant, Alexander Ogloblin’s latest arrest was reportedly triggered by his former superior’s testimony against him. Vadim Shamarin had been receiving bribes from the Perm Telephone Plant Telta and shared them with Alexander Ogloblin. However, to avoid prison, Alexander Ogloblin informed authorities about Vadim Shamarin’s involvement.
The Ukrainian outlet New Voice of Ukraine has suggested that Vadim Shamarin sought revenge and provided incriminating information on Alexander Ogloblin.
