    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former England captain Rooney is the Red Devils’ all-time leading scorer, with the target found being found on 253 occasions across a 13-year stint in Manchester that delivered 559 appearances. During that iconic spell at the Theatre of Dreams, 16 trophies were collected – including Premier League and Champions League titles.

    • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rooney will forever be held in the highest regard by United supporters, but the Daily Star claims that he will never be offered an ambassadorial role – at least while the current ownership groups are in place. The 39-year-old has no time for such a position at present, as he is back in management at Championship side Plymouth.

      DID YOU KNOW?

It is, however, being claimed that he would not be asked to represent the club again – away from the field this time – if his professional schedule were to be cleared. United have already taken a similar stance with legendary former boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been removed from his £2 million-a-year ambassador role.

      WHAT NEXT?

The likes of Peter Schmeichel, Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown, Andy Cole, Denis Irwin and Bryan Robson are all still associated with United in some capacity, as they represent the club around the world, but Rooney is set to be surprisingly left off that list indefinitely despite all that he achieved for the Premier League heavyweights.
