Presidential candidate Rixi Moncada on Sunday spoke out against attacks she and President Xiomara Castro have faced on social media , calling them “misogynistic” and urging the perpetrators to seek medical help.
During a speech in the municipality of Sensenti, in Ocotepeque, Moncada addressed “those misogynists who attack every day on social media, who are ungrateful to the brave president that this people and this country have today,” to whom she assured that they will not stop female leadership in Honduras.
Moncada, currently the defense secretary, made the statements over the weekend as part of her campaign to become the top official.
She also suggested that they “find a doctor to treat them because they will continue to be governed by a woman.”
Moncada’s statements come after Salvador Nasralla, also a presidential candidate for the Liberal Party, denounced that Libre tried to disqualify him with complaints filed against him at the Public Prosecutor’s Office for alleged falsification of documents to obtain candidacies.
Secretary of the Presidency accuses Nasralla of misogyny
For his part, the secretary of the presidency, Héctor Manuel Zelaya , joined in condemning Moncada and highlighted the seriousness of misogyny in the country and its link to gender violence, through his account on X (formerly Twitter).
President Castro’s son added that these attacks perpetuate the violence faced by many women in Honduras and must be rejected, particularly by influential leaders.
“As a son, husband and father of women, I especially urge those who aspire to be leaders to be examples in respecting the dignity of all women,” he said.
He criticized Nasralla for his comments, which he described as signs of ethical and moral deterioration.
“We can only say to Nasralla, who is known for his inconsistencies, that his attacks on women who lead and transform our country with courage and dedication only show us the moral and ethical exhaustion of a person who continues to live in the caveman age,” he concluded.
