In the last few hours, the death of the former mayor of Bucaramanga, Colombia, Rodolfo Hernández Suárez, was reported , after having been hospitalized for several months. Born in Piedecuesta, Colombia, on March 26, 1945, Hernández was a renowned Colombian civil engineer, businessman and politician.
He led the Anti-Corruption Rulers League party since 2019, standing out for reaching second place in the 2022 presidential elections.
In March 2024, he was convicted of corruption in the Vitalogic case , related to his management as mayor, at which time he also revealed that he was suffering from terminal cancer.
During his term as mayor of Bucaramanga, between 2016 and 2019, he resigned after being suspended for political propaganda. In June 2021, he registered his independent candidacy for the Presidency of Colombia for the 2022 elections, reaching the second round but failing to win the presidency.
As a result of the opposition statute, he assumed a seat in the Senate from July 2022, although he resigned in September of that same year, his resignation being accepted in October.
On August 4, 2022, after obtaining legal status for his party LIGA from the National Electoral Council, he became the first president and legal representative of said political organization. In addition, Hernández was the owner of the HG Construction Company, with an estimated fortune of 100 million dollars.

Rodolfo Hernández Suárez was born on March 26, 1945 in Piedecuesta, Santander, located southeast of Bucaramanga, where he lived most of his life. He was the son of Luis Jesús Hernández Rojas and Cecilia Suárez de Hernández, both of peasant origin.
Hernández had three brothers, Humberto, Alfonso, and Gabriel, the last two being also civil engineers.

He was married to Socorro Oliveros, with whom he had four children, Mauricio and Juliana, adopted; and Luis Carlos and Rodolfo José, his biological children. The National Liberation Army (ELN) kidnapped and allegedly murdered his daughter Juliana in 2004, although the organization denied having participated in the kidnapping.

He completed his primary education at the Escuela Anexa a la Normal Superior de Varones in Piedecuesta. He completed his high school studies at the Colegio de Santander in Bucaramanga, where he graduated alongside future businessmen, politicians and professionals. In 1970, he obtained his degree in Civil Engineering from the National University of Colombia.

The International Hospital of Colombia (HIC) reported in a statement that, despite the efforts of his team, Hernández died due to complications from his metastatic disease.
