Russia closes door to any discussion

Russia categorically refuses to enter into nuclear talks with the United States because of its desire to expand NATO to include other countries.
The military defense organization welcomed two new members this year, Sweden in March and Finland in April, but Russia sees the expansion as a real threat.
“We do not see any point in a dialogue with Washington without respect for Russia’s fundamental interests. First of all, this is the problem of NATO’s expansion in the post-Soviet space, which poses threats to common security,” said Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Earlier this week, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated that Russia will not sign a new treaty with the United States regulating each country’s nuclear arsenal.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin has been threatening to use nuclear warheads.
