As adverse weather conditions approach, the Russian military is stepping up mechanized assaults in Ukraine in order to gain tactical advantages before muddy terrain hamper its movements.

According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russia is conducting operations at a high pace, particularly around Kharkiv and Pokrovsk, aimed at making significant advances before autumn rains, winter snow and mud limit the maneuverability of mechanical vehicles.

Although it has many mechanized units, Russia faces limitations due to significant losses of tanks and armored vehicles, forcing some units to use improvised means of transportation such as civilian vehicles and even golf carts.

Conclusion:

“Adverse weather conditions in the fall of 2024 and early winter of 2024-2025 will likely complicate and limit maneuvers by mechanized troops and infantry, but Russian forces may seek to maintain their steady offensive pressure in eastern Ukraine despite these challenges,” the Institute for Study of War added.
