Russian castaway rescued after surviving 67 days at sea in inflatable raft

The survivor, who lost 50 kilos in two months, was rushed to hospital in a state of severe shock.

A 46-year-old man was rescued from the Okhotsk Sea after spending 67 days at sea on an inflatable raft, authorities in the Russian Far East said Tuesday .

According to the Russian Transport Prosecutor’s Office, which has opened a criminal case to investigate the incident, two brothers and their 15-year-old son left a town in the Khabarovsk region on August 9 bound for the island of Sakhalin in the Pacific Ocean.

The travellers were carrying clothing, life jackets, flares, a small supply of food and 20 litres of water in their boat.

A few hours after beginning the journey, contact with the travelers was lost.

The search operation lasted for several days, but yielded no results until the boat was spotted on October 14 by the ship “Ángel”, whose crew was the first to rescue the shipwrecked man.

The survivor, who lost 50 kilos in two months, was rushed to a hospital in the Magadan region in a state of severe shock, according to Russian media.
