Russia has launched a large-scale counter-offensive in the Kursk region, which has been partly under Ukrainian control since a surprise attack in early August.
Vladimir Putin intends to arrive at the negotiating table from a position of strength before Donald Trump takes office.
“It’s a massive regrouping with probably a fifth of North Korean forces. Facing them, Ukrainian forces are estimated at around 10,000, with defensive positions prepared in advance”, detailed General Dominique Trinquand, former head of the military mission to the UN.
According to US officials, Russia has trained the North Koreans in artillery fire, basic infantry tactics and trench attack. This training suggests that Kim Jong Un’s men will be engaged in frontal assaults against the entrenched positions of Kiev’s troops.
But according to military analysts, Putin’s counter-offensive to retake Russian territory is not going exactly to plan.
For Ukrainian soldiers, the fighting continues, and they are paying dearly for every square kilometer retaken by Russian troops. The “braking” tactic is working for now.
