Former CIA Director Leon Panetta has claimed that Vladimir Putin is using Donald Trump as a trusted source to his advantage.
During his appearance on the One Decision podcast , the former CIA chief commented on recent statements by journalist Bob Woodward. In his new book, the American author reveals that Donald Trump and the Russian head of state spoke on the phone at least seven times after the former businessman left the White House in 2021.
Panetta acknowledged that it was “highly unusual” for the Russian president to have any form of communication with a former U.S. leader. He said, among other things, that Vladimir Putin knows “how to work with a source. He has a source that is very close to the top in this country, he will engage that source himself.”
“The main thing to remember is that Trump has become a source for Putin and someone who can help him in his manipulation ,” added Leon Panetta.
Leon Panetta, who led the intelligence service from 2009 to 2011, said he was concerned that the two men could continue to have private conversations.
“The mere fact that a former president of the United States is having regular conversations with our principal adversary raises real questions about his fundamental loyalty,” he said.
