Jamal Simmons, Kamala Harris’ former communications director, made an unlikely suggestion about how the vice president might still have a shot at becoming president in 2024, with a Joe Biden resignation.
“Joe Biden has been a phenomenal president,” said Ms. Simmons. “He’s kept so many promises he made. He has one promise left that he can keep: to be a transitional figure.”
There’s no indication that Biden would consider leaving office before the end of his term.
According to Simmons, such a move would spare Harris from having to oversee her own defeat when the presidential election is certified by the Senate, and would dominate the news at a time when Democrats must learn to capture the public’s attention.
The Vice President also serves as President of the Senate, including when Congress certifies the results of the presidential election.
