Shame in Belgium: they renovated the wrong bridge…52,000 euros gone up in smoke

A good Belgian joke? It’s not! This incident (which is unusual, to say the least) did indeed take place.
It was a question of renovating a bridge that belonged to the Walloon Region, in the city of Charleroi (Belgium). The company hired to replace a guardrail went to the wrong destination. In fact, the workers commissioned by the Public Service of Wallonia, which had launched a public contract, carried out the work on an almost identical building, located above the Charleroi-Brussels canal, just a few meters from the “correct” bridge.
A costly mistake?
A small problem: the structure that was finally renovated belongs to the city of Charleroi and not to the Walloon Region. The result? A bill of 52,000 euros… Luckily, the municipality of Charleroi, which was planning to replace the guardrails of the bridge anyway, agreed to pay the bill!
