According to political analyst Saúl Bueso, it is a fact that the United States Southern Command will intercede with the Secretary of Defense, Rixi Moncada, and the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces, Roosevelt Hernández , for the restitution of the Extradition Treaty , recently denounced by the Government of Honduras.

“They will have to address it – the issue of the Extradition Treaty – and it will be very thorny for both representatives, because they will have to put on the table the reasons that prompted the Government to denounce that Treaty,” said Bueso.

At the meeting to be held next week in Washington, United States , strategies to combat drug trafficking will be addressed ; and of course the validity of extradition is key to strengthening ties in the area of combating this scourge, said the leader of civil society.

It is worth mentioning that during the last decade, 53 Hondurans were extradited to the United States, including former President Juan Orlando Hernández, sentenced to 45 years in prison for drug trafficking.

In addition, the former head of the National Police, Juan Carlos ‘El Tigre’ Bonilla, former police officers, former officials, former deputies and drug lords.

Denunciation of the Extradition Treaty

On August 28, President  Xiomara Castro  made the decision to  denounce the extradition treaty  due to “interference and interventionism” by the United States in Honduran politics.

However, the president’s accusations have generated tensions due to accusations of political interference by the US government, and according to presidential adviser Manuel Zelaya Rosales, the extradition treaty “is an instrument in the hands of the enemy.”

The future of the agreement remains uncertain, as the Honduran government  will review the treaty  in February 2025, according to a statement by Honduran Vice Foreign Minister Gerardo Torres on September 5.
