    WHAT HAPPENED?

Amorim had predicted that the Red Devils faithful would start comparing him to Ferguson if Sporting had got the better of City. And the Portuguese manager was vindicated as United fans indeed started hailing him as the Scotsman’s heir after Sporting humiliated the English champions 4-1 on Tuesday evening.

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

United fan @Chuckymedellin said: “Ruben Amorim was right. 😂 He really is the new Sir Alex Ferguson.”

@gregianjohnson wrote: “Now I have become the new Sir Alex Ferguson, destroyer of perches.”

While @CaseyEvans demanded: “Not saying Amorim is definitely going to be a success at United but I say we start building the statue now.”

A thrilled @UTDTrey wrote: “If you’re a Manchester United fan and you expect Ruben Amorim to take over England just because he’s thrashing Pep right now then you’re ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, we are winning it all😭❤️”.

However, @Mr_Nzeu was a bit more sceptic and wrote: “Good luck to Amorim cz those United players will not run like this 😔”.

Whereas, @mizar voiced his apprehensions and wrote: “Manchester United is going to ruin Ruben Amorim, you saw what we did to Erik Ten Hag 😭.”

And @twos6xes wrote: “pep type of weirdo to lose this game on purpose just to sell false dreams on amorim.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Although City got off to a bright start, with Phil Foden taking just four minutes to open the scoring, a hat-trick from Victor Gyokeres dismantled Pep Guardiola’s side. Erling Haaland was an anonymous figure in attack and his miserable night got worse when he hit the woodwork with his penalty.

    WHAT NEXT FOR AMORIM?

It was a fitting home farewell for Amorim before he leaves Lisbon for English shores on November 11. His last match in charge will be against Braga on Sunday in the Portuguese top-flight. Meanwhile, City will look to return to winning ways when they lock horns against Brighton on Saturday in the Premier League.
