Storm Oscar strengthens into a Category 1 hurricane in the Atlantic

According to the National Hurricane Center, Oscar is moving west at about 12 mph.

Tropical Storm Oscar strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday , threatening the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas, the National Hurricane Center reported .

The agency issued a hurricane watch for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas , and a hurricane warning for the provinces of Guantanamo, Holguin and Las Tunas , located in Cuba, a country currently facing an energy crisis.

Oscar, which formed today and was quickly named the 15th tropical storm of the current Atlantic hurricane season, is expected to bring heavy rains to Caribbean islands this weekend .

However, the agency described the hurricane as “small.”

Oscar is not expected to make it to the US.

According to the National Hurricane Center , Oscar is moving west at about 12 mph (19 km/h), with maximum sustained winds of about 80 mph (130 km/h).

Oscar is not expected to reach the United States, but the National Weather Service in Melbourne, Florida, said today that it could bring strong waves to the beaches of the east coast of the North American country.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has forecast 17 to 25 storms this year , which is higher than usual.

According to the agency, hurricanes tend to peak in mid-September.
