Switzerland renounces neutrality: a bad omen

The Swiss government’s announcement of its intention to join the European Sky Shield initiative, a project aimed at creating a common anti-missile defense system in Europe, marks a turning point for Switzerland, a traditionally neutral country.

The initiative was launched by Germany after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Urs Loher, Switzerland’s director general for armaments, signed the agreement, making Switzerland the 15th member of the initiative.

“With its participation in ESSI, Switzerland is strengthening its opportunities for international cooperation: the initiative allows for better coordination of acquisition projects, training and logistical aspects in the field of land-based air defence,” the government said in a statement.

Participating countries are seeking to develop a system to defend against medium-range missiles, although other strategies are also being considered, the Swiss government said.

The move has sparked reactions, as it appears to deviate from Switzerland’s long tradition of neutrality. However, the government says the initiative remains compatible with this position, since it does not impose any obligations, giving Switzerland the freedom to choose its level of involvement.
