SZA has revealed that comedian Katt Williams called her “mentally ill” while they were filming a new movie together.
The TDE songstress sat down with Kendrick Lamar for an interview in Harper’s Bazaar that was published on Monday (October 21) and shared the memorable anecdote.
While making such a comment about somebody’s mental wellbeing might ordinarily cause offense, SZA said the famously sharp-tongued comedian actually meant it as a “compliment.”
“We shot a movie last night. I’ve never shot a movie before, so I was freaking out. It’s a lot of being scared to be myself. I’m either gonna pretend it never happened or not show up to the premiere,” she said.
“I met Katt Williams [on set]. He told me I was mentally ill, like, as a compliment. He was like, ‘Sa, I believe you might have some mental—’ And I was like, ‘Illness?’ And he was like, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Oh, welcome.’”
The film in question is an upcoming buddy comedy starring SZA and Keke Palmer.
The as-yet-untitled movie, which is set to hit theaters in January, will find the duo recapturing their chemistry from their 2022 Saturday Night Live episode.
Issa Rae is on board as a producer, while the cast is rounded out by the likes of Katt Williams, Lil Rel Howery, Janelle James, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Maude Apatow, Joshua Neal, Aziza Scott, Patrick Cage and Amin Joseph.
SZA has long been open about her mental health in her music, as well as in interviews and social media posts.
Writing on X (formerly Twitter) last year, the SOS star opened up about her struggles with anxiety and FOMO (the fear of missing out).
“No one teaches you how to enjoy ur life .. they teach you how to work for it . Desire it . Protect it .fight tooth n nail for it . Pray for it . imagine it .manifest it .. how do u process all the things you’ve prayed for,” she asked her followers.
“I get anxious posting ab my life then get fomo watching other ppl post then experience way more life so there’s so much more to post and get anxious ab the volume of material then fomo again watching awesome posts then back to experiencing more magical life material I can’t post.”
