The Ministry of Security reports 1,689 deaths so far in 2024, 648 fewer than in the same period in 2023.
The Ministry of Security reported a significant reduction of 27.7% in the rates of violence, deaths against women and homicides in general in Honduras.
According to data provided by the Online Police System (Sepol), from January 1 to September 2, 2024, a total of 23 multiple homicides were recorded in which 74 people lost their lives.
This indicates a clear decrease of seven events , equivalent to a reduction of 23%, and 88 fewer victims (55%) compared to the same period in 2023.
On the other hand, regarding multiple homicides, according to official reports from January 1 to September 2, 2024, a total of 23 events were recorded and a decrease of 7 events corresponding to -23% compared to the same period of the previous year.
The Ministry of Security reports 1,689 deaths so far in 2024; in 2023, 2,337 deaths were reported in different parts of the country.
Violent deaths of women
Regarding violent deaths of women, the National Observatory of Violence reports a reduction of 148% in violent deaths of women, corresponding to -47%, data shared by the police institution as a joint effort.
Emergency
This reduction is due to the effectiveness of the state of emergency that came into force in December 2022 in 123 municipalities of the country, according to the National Police.
“The mission of the current administration under the guidelines of the Presidency of the Republic has been to frontally combat the violence generated in the country and that is what we are doing, the figures show it,” said the head of Security, Gustavo Sánchez Velásquez.
“The work does not end here. We continue to work harder, aware that Hondurans need real security policies that guarantee their peace of mind,” he continued.
The official also stressed that these figures demonstrate the firm commitment to acting with transparency, honesty and efficiency in the uniformed institution.
Despite the reduction in violent deaths, the Honduran population continues to experience a climate of insecurity.
According to international agencies, Honduras continues to have one of the highest homicide rates, which rose from 38.14 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2022 to 31.14 in 2023, placing it first in Central America, second regionally, and sixth worldwide.
