The Criminal Court with National Jurisdiction in Organized Crime, Environment and Corruption Matters, issued this Sunday the precautionary measure of judicial detention against three suspects of having participated in the murder of Juan Antonio López.
The defendants are: Oscar Alexis Guardado Alvarenga, Daniel Antonio Juarez Torres and Lenin Adonis Cruz Munguia, who are identified as the alleged perpetrators of the murder of human rights defender and municipal councilor of Tocoa, Juan Antonio Lopez.
The defendants’ statement hearing was held this Sunday, October 6, 2024.
The judge in charge of the case decided that the accused should remain in the National Penitentiary of Támara , in Francisco Morazán, while the investigation is carried out, due to the seriousness of the crime, the risk of escape and the possibility that they will alter evidence or attack other people involved.
The Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Against Life filed charges of murder against López and gave an account of the events, detailing the involvement of the accused in the crime.
The initial hearing for the continuation of the judicial process was scheduled for October 9, 2024 at 9:30 a.m.
Violent death of Juan Lopez
Juan Antonio López was a prominent human rights defender and environmentalist in Honduras, known for his work in the protection of natural resources and for his activism on behalf of communities affected by extractive projects.
His murder on September 14, 2023 has generated strong condemnation both nationally and internationally, highlighting the dangerous situation faced by human rights defenders in the country.
The circumstances of his death indicate that López was shot in the Fabio Ochoa neighborhood of Tocoa, in the department of Colón.
The authorities, through the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes Against Life, have initiated an investigation and have filed charges against three individuals: Óscar Alexi Guardado Alvarenga, Daniel Antonio Juárez Torres and Lenin Adonis Cruz Munguía.
