Trina is on the mend following a dark period of her life, during which she lost both her brother and her mother just a few years apart.
In April 2013, Trina’s brother Wilbrent “Gronk” Bain was fatally shot in Miami after he was involved in an altercation with a man said to be on a bicycle. And just over six years later in September 2019, her mother Vernessa “Nessa” Taylor passed away following a battle with an unspecified type of cancer at 62.
Appearing on The Tamron Hall Show on Wednesday (October 16), the Miami rapper got candid about finding her way out of the darkness.
“The loss of my brother is when life went dark for me,” she admitted. “And like, to the world, they see it as happy, smiling, just keep pushing. But for me, since 2013, my life was dark until now. Since 2013 when I lost my brother, I just felt so disconnected from the world. I felt like I wanted my life not to be here. Not to even think that in 2019, I would lose my mom.
She continued: “And that to me – I don’t know how to explain that to nobody. I really stopped believing in everything that I believe in life. I get that God gives the strongest [battles] to the [strongest people]. I’m not that strong. I just started breaking down losing myself. I don’t understand, how do you live without your mom?
“My mom is the person I call every second of the day to annoy her for every little thing I want. She’s never not been there for me. And when she wasn’t here, I just felt alone in the world. I have my sisters, my cousins, my family but it’s still my mom. It’s no certain time or way to get over the grief. I’ll never feel closure.”
During her NPR Tiny Desk performance in 2023, Trina paid tribute to her late mother and took a moment to applaud herself for being rap’s original “baddest bitch.”
The Miami rap legend ran through a few of her biggest hits during the intimate 15-minute performance, but took a minute in the early moments of the show to shout out her mom for raising her.
“This first song is dedicated to my mom,” Trina said before performing “Mama.” “Without her, there would be no me, and she’s the reason that I’m standing here right now for you guys. So I want you to just enjoy.”
As Trina closed out the track, she added: “It’s a very personal song to me and if anybody has ever lost their mom or somebody special in their life, I dedicate this song to you.”
She then switched gears and dove into her 2000 hit “Da Baddest Bitch.” “Now, I wanna introduce you guys to the baddest bitch,” she said. “The original baddest bitch.”
Trina rounded out her setlist by performing “Single Again,” “Here We Go” and her 1999 collaboration with Trick Daddy, “Nann N-gga.”
