Tropical storm Kristy formed on Monday in the Mexican Pacific, with no warnings that it will make landfall in the country, meteorological authorities reported.

According to Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN), Kristy developed 440 kilometers south-southwest of Acapulco, in the state of Guerrero, and 490 kilometers south of Lázaro Cárdenas, in Michoacán.

With sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gusts of up to 85 km/h, Kristy is moving west at 28 km/h, keeping its path away from the coast.

However, its presence will cause very heavy rains in the states of Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco and Michoacán , as well as strong winds and high waves of up to two meters in those regions, the agency warned.

Authorities also forecast periods of showers in the state of Nayarit.

In addition, the Mexican Meteorological Service warned of the possibility that the rains caused by Kristy could cause puddles , landslides and flooding in low-lying areas.

Although Kristy will not directly impact Mexican territory, it is part of a particularly active cyclone season in the Pacific.

In 2024, Mexico has already suffered the onslaught of other meteorological phenomena, such as Hurricane John, which caused considerable damage to infrastructure and forced the evacuation of thousands of people, with more than twenty deaths in its wake.

The Pacific hurricane season , which runs from May to November, has so far produced several systems, although most, like Kristy, have not made landfall.

However, the authorities have reported that they will continue to monitor these phenomena, warning about the possible risks they could pose to the population. EFE
