Slovenian Melania Trump, wife of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, usually keeps a low profile when it comes to political positions. But this week, Melania sent shockwaves through the Trump clan.
Melania Trump’s book, “Melania,” will be published next week. In it, she fiercely defends the right to abortion. “Why should anyone other than the woman have the power to determine what she does with her body? A woman’s fundamental right to individual liberty, to her own life, gives her the power to terminate a pregnancy if she chooses.”
Not surprisingly, former White House incumbent Donald Trump and many of his supporters strongly disagree with this statement, as the right to terminate a pregnancy has become a major political issue in the United States, particularly since the Supreme Court struck down federal abortion law and made states responsible for the issue. Republicans in power immediately tightened the rules in their states.
Today, Trump himself seems to want to avoid the subject publicly, for fear of losing voters. His deeply Christian running mate, J.D. Vance, and his supporters believe that the candidate should take a clearer position against abortion. These hardline evangelicals also believe that a woman should “follow in her husband’s footsteps.”
For her part, Trump’s wife does not hesitate to take a position, even if it means opposing her husband: “It is imperative that women have the autonomy to decide for themselves whether they want children, based on their own convictions, independently of any government intervention or pressure.” And Melania goes even further: “Limiting a woman’s right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is like denying her control over her own body.”
