However, an official from Donald Trump’s campaign has clarified that his comment was a joke and will not be part of his policy.
Just like in the science fiction film ‘The Purge’ , former US President Donald Trump proposed, during a rally in Pennsylvania, that police forces be given a set period of time during which they would have free rein to respond with violence to any crime.
The former president has suggested taking up his own version of ‘The Purge’ , the film series in which one night a year it is possible to commit any kind of crime without having to answer to justice.
Repeating his grim narrative about a United States crumbling under an “invasion” of violent migrants and criminals , Trump called for a “violent” police crackdown on crime in the United States, AFP reported.
After recalling isolated but widely publicised incidents of daylight robberies at shops in major cities, the Conservative tycoon received a standing ovation when he suggested police should become “extraordinarily tough” .
At this campaign event, he stated that criminals “must be taught” and that this could be done with “a really violent day” by the Police.
” A rough hour. And I mean really rough… Word would get out and it would be over immediately,” Trump said, denouncing that the agents “are not allowed to do their jobs” because “the liberal left won’t let them.”
What is Donald Trump’s ‘Purge’?
This concept proposed by Trump is very similar to that of the ‘Purge’ films, in which, after an economic crisis in the United States and Latin America that led to the fall of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, a state of emergency is declared where all types of crimes are allowed for one night a year.
During this time, all known crime is legal and services (police, fire, and hospitals) are closed . The Purge has only two rules: government officials of rank 10 or higher have complete immunity, and the use of weapons above class 4 (e.g. weapons of mass destruction) is prohibited.
The reason given by the Government in fiction for maintaining this practice is that it acts as a catharsis for citizens; but in reality it is used as an artificial method of population control, in which the poorest and homeless people are eliminated.
