Two of incoming US President Donald Trump’s top advisors, Keith Kellogg and Fred Fleitz, have a plan to end the war in Ukraine.
The plan stipulates that Kiev will only receive more US weapons if peace negotiations with Russia begin.
The US will warn Moscow that refusal to negotiate will result in increased support for Ukraine. During the negotiations, a ceasefire on the current front lines is expected.
For the two advisors, it will be extremely important to get Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table quickly.
“We say to the Ukrainians: you have to sit down at the negotiating table, and if you don’t sit down, American support will end. And to Russian President, Vladimir Putin: you have to sit down at the negotiating table, and if you don’t, we’ll give the Ukrainians everything they need to kill you on the battlefield.”
According to Reuters, Moscow could be forced into negotiations by delaying Ukraine’s promise of NATO membership. Fleitz stressed that Ukraine did not need to formally cede territory to Russia.
However, he added that it was unlikely that Kiev would be able to regain control of all its territory in the short term: “Our concern is that this war has turned into a war of attrition that will kill a whole generation of young people.”
