Two Nigerians were arrested at Las Americas International Airport (AILA), near the Dominican capital, before flying to Paris (France) with bags of cocaine in their stomachs, the National Directorate of Drug Control (DNCD) reported in a statement on Sunday.
The agents and military personnel, acting on intelligence reports, proceeded to intercept the two foreigners and, after carrying out the protocol applied in these cases, detected foreign bodies in the digestive tracts of both passengers using X-ray machines.
They were immediately transferred to the Central Hospital of the Armed Forces, where specialist doctors began the process of removing the bags containing the substance, which turned out to be cocaine.
“The two Nigerians, who will be identified in due course, are believed to have travelled to France on the same flight from the Americas terminal; both have so far expelled more than 150 bags,” the DNCD said.
People who are involved in this type of crime are known as ‘mules’ and most of them are recruited in marginalised neighbourhoods in Europe.
Authorities are handling reports that this is a criminal structure that uses Dominicans and foreigners to transport drugs in their stomachs to Europe and the United States.
In addition to the anti-narcotics agency, the operation was carried out by the Specialized Airport Security Corps (CESAC) and state intelligence agencies, coordinated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The Ministry and the DNCD are carrying out the necessary investigations to determine if there are other people involved in the failed international drug trafficking operation.EFE
